About Salsa Music
The word “salsa”, which in the ‘60s and ‘70s came to describe contemporary afro – Latino – Caribbean dance music, is credited to various sources and events.
Like its name, salsa music is descended from popular Cuban music. In the ‘60s, the word began to be used to describe the hot fusion styles of New York Puerto Rican and Cuban music, much of it based on Cuban musical forms but some based on Puerto Rican folkloric styles such as bomba and plena. Salsa was also used to describe Dominican dance music based on merengue. Some salsa was injected with jazz, rock and rhythm and blues.
The salsa today includes sons, cha – chas, charanga, boleros, merengue and even Latin jazz. And it all blended into one irresistible, danceable whole.
Salsa, the dance
Salsa is similar to Mambo in that both have a pattern of six steps danced over eight counts of music. The dances share many of the same moves. In Salsa, turns have become an important feature, so the overall look and feel is quite different from those of Mambo. Mambo moves generally forward and backward, whereas, Salsa has more of a side to side feel.
